Q&A

Aldebol asks about exam schedule and hiring from lists

New York City Council · Sep 22, 2026 · starts 0:35:35 · 1 min 11 sec

Aldebol asks how frequently DCAS hires from lists; Porter explains lists last up to four years and exams are given on 2-3 year cycles, with police exams monthly.

Shirley Aldebol

And is that testing schedule is based on the need that the agencies will ask DCAS for?

Katrina Porter

Yeah, so civil service lists in general, they're usually...

Katrina Porter

So long as there are candidates available for up to four years.

Katrina Porter

So we usually give exams on a two to three year cycle, unless it's a title where there may be an immediate hiring need where we need to give it more often.

Katrina Porter

So like police officer, we know that the city is in need of police officers.

Katrina Porter

So we give that exam every month.

Katrina Porter

So we give it 12 times a year.

Katrina Porter

Whereby a title like sanitation worker, where we have a larger applicant pool, we may give that exam every three to four years.

Shirley Aldebol

And how frequently do you actually hire from those lists?

Shirley Aldebol

Like, for example, the police officer list.

Katrina Porter

Yes, so hiring happens at the agency level.

Katrina Porter

The way it works is that they would contact DCAS when they're ready to hire, and then we would issue them what we call a list certification, which contains the names of candidates who took and passed the examination and are available to be considered for employment.
