Aldebol asks about Local Law 191 and CUNY courses
Aldebol asks if DCAS recommends specific CUNY courses; Otar says they focus on promoting opportunities and the how-to of getting city jobs, not specific classes.
So I want to talk a little bit about past local law implementation.
Pursuant to local law 191 of 2025, DCAS was required to provide materials to CUNY by July 1st of this year to promote careers in civil service.
These materials include information about civil service process, descriptions of related CUNY programs, and a link to the examination webpage.
Given DCAS's close coordination with CUNY on many civil service pathway initiatives, are there any courses or programs offered at CUNY that you would recommend to civil service applicants writ large to help improve career readiness?
Our engagement with CUNY and the students is more about promoting the opportunities that are available to them, the civil service examinations.
What we notice is that a lot of people are just not aware of the program.
And then because of the diversity in the jobs that are available for city government, it's hard for us to say, hey, if you take this particular class, then you can apply for city jobs.
There's a variety of jobs that CUNY students can qualify for, especially with our civil service pathway programs.
There's about seven different career tracks.
So we focus a lot on giving them the information about how to get into those programs.
We partner with CUNY for CUNY-specific events where we're sharing information about the application process.
We have individuals that have gone through the process speak to them about what that process has been like.
Whenever we're having events, we want to make sure that we make sure that they are invited to participate in those sessions.
And sometimes it could be tied to career readiness where we give them advice on how to participate and how to exceed or excel in the events that we have coming up.
So we may not particularly direct them to a class because of the nature of the jobs within the city, but we focus on information on the how-to when it comes to getting a job in city government.
