Van Auken describes events, co-governance, and campaigns teams
Van Auken says the events team supported over 30 events attended by 5,800 New Yorkers, the co-governance team helped launch a $3 million child care emergency grant program, and the campaigns team knocked on over 10,000 doors leading to nearly 2,500 organizing conversations.
Our events team has supported over 30 events in 30 weeks, attended by over 5,800 New Yorkers, from New York City 101s, where New Yorkers get educated on how our government works,
to events like Pick Up at the People's House and cultural heritage events, where New Yorkers can see their heritage uplifted at City Hall.
Our co-governance team supports agencies and the administration in building out models for shared accountability with New Yorkers and advocates in policymaking.
For example, they supported the Mayor's Office of Child Care and Early Childhood Education on building a co-governance table for child care workers that led to the launch of a $3 million emergency grant program.
specifically in response to the needs and gaps identified by this table.
This is yet another way that OME strives to bring New Yorkers into the work of city government.
The campaigns team empowers the most impacted New Yorkers to participate in the decisions that affect them.
New York City volunteers, led by our staff, have knocked on over 10,000 doors, leading to nearly 2,500 successful organizing conversations with New Yorkers.
In these conversations, we listened to their concerns, shared information about their rights, and invited them out to educational events.
We've seen great success in this work.
At the recent bus rider town hall with Mayor Mumdani and the Department of Transportation, 70% of attendees were from zip codes directly impacted by the bus plan.
