Q&A

Narcisse asks how H&H supports parents and caregivers as protective factors

New York City Council · Sep 23, 2026 · starts 0:52:12 · 1 min 29 sec

Narcisse asks how H&H involves and supports parents and caregivers, given family acceptance's protective role. Fattal says child and adolescent behavioral services include families and caregivers, H&H works in 50 schools, and the same approach applies to LGBTQ patients.

Mercedes Narcisse

And we have been joined by my colleagues, Wilson, in the house.

Mercedes Narcisse

How does H&H involve and support parents and caregivers, giving the role of family acceptance as a protective factor?

Omar Fattal

Yeah, for all our child and adolescent behavioral services, including the family, the legal guardian, the other caregivers involved in the care of the patient, is core to what we do in treating all our patients.

Omar Fattal

And this is definitely true in the case of LGBTQ patients and in the case of providing gender-affirming care.

Mercedes Narcisse

While we're at it, do we create a support system for the family specifically?

Mercedes Narcisse

Because we know.

Mercedes Narcisse

in some culture is more difficult for acceptance.

Mercedes Narcisse

And that's the reason when I started, I talk about acceptance and accessible and where we are in life.

Omar Fattal

Yeah, definitely.

Omar Fattal

We have this in mental health in general because there's a lot of stigma and there's a lot of resistance sometimes from families, communities.

Omar Fattal

So we're used to doing that.

Omar Fattal

We're very used to including other caregivers, including the communities.

Omar Fattal

We do a lot of work, for example, in schools.

Omar Fattal

We're present in 50 schools in New York where we provide mental health services.

Omar Fattal

So we have this as part of the way we provide services for children and adolescents, and we apply the same when dealing with gender-affirming care or when working with LGBTQ patients.
