Chair Joseph asks about emerging destinations; Stephen Ferst describes Morocco medical internship
Chair Joseph asks about emerging countries and mentions Uganda. Jessica Rothman cites Morocco, and Ferst describes a CUNY-wide medical internship in Morocco where students do observational hospital rounds in obstetrics, oncology, pediatrics, and pharmacy, shaping their career decisions.
And what are some of the emerging countries that you see students are interested in now?
I know Uganda's one.
We see Morocco, actually.
There's a very popular CSI program in Morocco.
That students are interested in.
I'm going to chaperone the one to Morocco.
It's actually developed for CUNYwide.
It is a medical internship program.
So students spend four weeks in Morocco.
They get up every morning very early.
You might want to rethink the chaperoning.
Okay.
And they go on rounds.
They go on rounds in a hospital with doctors.
It's an observational program.
They make their rounds through obstetrics, through...
Oncology through pediatrics, through pharmacy, and each day they go to maybe three or four sessions of different rounds.
They spend time in the OR, and they really learn quite a lot.
I have two quick stories about two students.
One who I visited when she was there, and she had just come out of the OR room, and she showed me her hand.
She goes, look at how steady I am.
I was born to be a surgeon, and this program just cemented what I want to do.
And another student who came back and said,
Thank you for sending me on this program.
I never want to step foot in a hospital again.
So we were able to, with two students, really set the trajectory of their career with this program.
It is very popular across CUNY, and it gives students an experience that they just can't get anywhere else.
Absolutely.
That's why I'm championing this.
