Chair Joseph asks about expanding overseas programs; Holland discusses evolving offerings
Chair Joseph asks if CUNY plans to expand overseas study abroad once systems improve. Holland says programs will evolve with demand and safety, citing past programs in Mali that are no longer feasible and current interest in Morocco as Middle East options shift.
Once you perfect the system, because I hear that across the board that you're looking to perfect this, do you plan to expand the overseas study abroad program?
I think expansion, I would say, I would like to think that the range of programs that we have is always going to evolve and respond to current opportunities.
That will also involve some programs that...
Either there's not enough demand or safety in that area over a period of time.
I will say in a previous position, I used to send students regularly to Mali.
Right.
There were incredible opportunities.
It was a visual and performing arts program.
You could never do that now.
Right.
So you have to find other opportunities and grow those opportunities.
I think that the interest now in programs in Morocco is in part a reaction to...
To problem sending students to other locations in the Middle East.
We know that Hunter College, which has a very strong Arabic language program, has really struggled to find opportunities for its students, and they have been investigating opportunities in Morocco because their programs in Jordan
have not been feasible for a while.
Okay.
All right.
So we have work to do.
