Gutiérrez asks for number of multilingual learners in ECE
Gutiérrez asks if NYCPS or the Mayor's Office have an estimated number of multilingual learners in early childhood programs. Branch reports 30,058 total, with breakdowns for pre-K, 3K, 2K, and infants.
My next question is just regarding data for early childhood.
And I know that it might be a little bit more complicated, but does NYCPS or the Mayor's Office of Child Care, do you all have an estimated number of multilingual learners in early childhood education programs?
Yes, we do.
So currently we have across the entire portfolio, so across all of our pre-K centers, 3K,
our 2K expansion programs, and our infants, we have a total of 30,058 multilingual learners.
So I can give you the breakdown if you want in terms of like pre-K versus 3K, 2K.
Would you like that?
Yes.
Can you just repeat then?
You said 30,000?
So the total is 30,058.
Okay.
Wow, that's precise.
Okay, yes.
I'm pleased if you could do the breakdown.
Thank you.
So in pre-K, we have 12,725.
3K, 6,737.
In our 2K programs, 581.
And our little infants, 15 currently.
Okay, excellent.
Thank you.
And then how do you all, how do you kind of keep, how do you keep track of this?
It's like, how often are you being informed of like,
There's a new family who was identified as like a multi-language learner.
Right.
So initially, the, you know, initially families can actually share that information.
even when they apply, right, when they're applying through the MySchools account.
But that information is also maintained at the school or at the program.
And that information is shared with the division.
And we're able to keep track of that because in addition to just the numbers and knowing that we have them, we do a lot of coaching.
The Division of Early Childhood Education, that's really...
What I'm most proud of is in terms of how we really are able to support programs and really go in and provide support to teachers so that they can better support their multilingual learners.
So that information is captured and sent over to the division quite often.
We have people on the ground who are able to also keep track of that information as well.
