Gutiérrez asks how K-5 dual-language schools add pre-K
Gutiérrez asks what happens when a K-5 dual-language school wants a pre-K dual-language program. Garcia describes a $1.3 million bilingual revitalization allocation to 193 schools and $15,000 for new programs.
And a K through five dual language school that wants a pre-K dual language, is the response from NYCPS?
Do you currently already have a teacher that can do this?
Or are there scenarios where the school wants it and they don't have it and they need more funding?
Dr.
Branch, do you want to?
Yeah, I can speak a little bit to that.
So we have a school allocation memorandum for bilingual revitalization.
We just disseminated the one this year, about $1.3 million, went to 193 schools.
Schools that are in the planning year and the first five years of program existence so that we continue to provide some fundings for them to be able to sustain.
With that said, this is supplemental, right?
It's not going to completely help a school stand up a whole program.
It is for professional learning for teachers and for administrators, for parental engagement to get parents in and informed about the program, and for supplemental materials like home language libraries, home language supplies.
We do include our pre-K programs in that school allocation memorandum.
So if a pre-K dual language program was to open, we would include it in this bilingual revitalization school allocation memorandum.
So this year, for example, any new program got $15,000.
To support, again.
For any school?
No, for new dual, for K-12, it's any bilingual program.
So dual language or transitional bilingual and specific to pre-K, any new pre-K dual language bilingual education program.
Okay.
Okay, I might have some follow-ups on that.
