Council Member Banks questions World Cup benefits for NYCHA residents
Chris Banks notes the city invested $90 million and brought back $2 billion, then focuses on public housing residents. He asks whether NYCHA residents were included in employment, procurement, vending, or business outreach strategies.
Thank you, Chiz, for this important committee.
$90 million invested by the city, $2 billion brought back to the New York City economy.
Good job, guys.
Let me, first of all, relegate it to public housing.
And I think this is important when we have close to 511,000, a little under
500,000 residential, a little over 500,000 residential living public housing, 87,000 in Brooklyn, close to 86,000 in the Bronx.
30,000 in Queens, 9,000 in Staten Island, 86,000 in Manhattan.
Recently, there was a survey done by the CSS, Community Service Society, which showed that the unemployment rate in public housing is anywhere between 20% to 22%.
And we know that the unemployment rate amongst NITRA residents is higher than the overall rate citywide.
Specifically, when it comes to public housing, I want to understand whether NITRA residents were specifically included in the city's World Cup employment, procurement, or vending, or business outreach strategies.
And was there any direct partnership with EDC and New York City Housing Authority?
