Honda says the outcomes prove major events can translate into real economic impacts across the five boroughs. She says the city must take an active role in supporting local businesses and coordinating future events, and closes with memories of fans watching Argentina's comebacks and Central Park finals.

Maya Honda

Taken together, these outcomes prove that major international sporting events like the World Cup can translate into real economic impacts for New Yorkers.

Maya Honda

That we can not only welcome visitors from around the world, but direct their attention, investment, and spending toward businesses and neighborhoods across the five boroughs.

Maya Honda

But these findings also make it clear that it's not simply enough that it's not simply enough.

Maya Honda

for cities to open up their doors to these events.

Maya Honda

City governments must take an active role in supporting local businesses, attracting investment, driving foot traffic to commercial corridors, and ensuring that major events are accessible to working people.

Maya Honda

These lessons of coordination must be front and center as New York City continues to compete for and host international events.

Maya Honda

Ultimately, though, we know that when New Yorkers remember the World Cup, they won't remember good economic statistics or the hard data of dollar figures.

Maya Honda

They will remember crowding into bars to watch Argentina maneuver two breathtaking comebacks.

Maya Honda

They will remember riding World Cup-branded trains and ferries across the five boroughs to collect commemorative cups and stamps.

Maya Honda

They'll remember laying a blanket down on the great lawn of Central Park to watch the finals match, then instantly standing back up again to cheer on their team.

Maya Honda

That is what this tournament was ultimately about.

Maya Honda

As we look ahead to future international events and opportunities, we will continue to build on the lessons learned from the World Cup, using data and experience to strengthen our approach and maximize benefits to New Yorkers.

Maya Honda

Thank you for the opportunity to testify today.
