Thomas-Henry questions separating World Cup impact from 250th and Knicks events

New York City Council · Sep 30, 2026 · starts 0:37:23 · 2 min 54 sec

Thomas-Henry notes the World Cup overlapped with the 250th anniversary celebration and asks how much impact is attributable to each. Kreamer says Tourism Economics used out-of-market match attendees and official World Cup event attendees as the baseline.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

Second question, the World Cup and the 250th celebration overlapped.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

Have you assessed how much of that economic impact can be attributed directly to the World Cup versus what can be attributed to the visitors we got for the 250th anniversary?

Justin Kreamer

Yeah, so the way that tourism economics went about trying to disaggregate that information as best as possible was, again, using as the baseline of the analysis of that

Justin Kreamer

number of people who attended a World Cup game from out of the market and those who attended a World Cup affiliated event from outside the market.

Justin Kreamer

And so that's the base that was used.

Justin Kreamer

If you were here for the Knicks parade specifically or anything else, that would not have been counted if you didn't go to the game or you didn't go to an official fan fest.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

Good point.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

I forgot about the Nixon five.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

So I'm just curious, like, how do you separate that?

Justin Kreamer

The way it's separated is identifying who specifically went to, like who came to New York City with the intent of watching a World Cup match.

Justin Kreamer

Right, who bought a ticket from out of the market.

Justin Kreamer

And so that is one portion of the equation.

Justin Kreamer

And then the other portion of the equation is who showed up to a,

Justin Kreamer

a authorizer, an official World Cup fan zone event.

Justin Kreamer

And based off that information is how we get to determine that that person came to New York City for the World Cup specifically.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

Okay, so what if I wanted to come and I celebrated the Knicks in five, came to the parade and said, oh, man, there's a fan fest in my neighborhood.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

I want to go and check that out.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

I wasn't coming for the World Cup, but I came to celebrate the Knicks.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

So are we counting what could have otherwise brought someone to the city as World Cup if they just happened to stumble upon World Cup activities?

Justin Kreamer

I'd have to go look at the calendar, but from what I recall, the parade was kind of at the beginning of the World Cup and a war that overlapped with the fan zone events.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

Or just in general.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

I come to New York.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

I want to come see a play.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

But I'm like, oh, my gosh, the World Cup.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

And I may want to check something out.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

So currently, right now, there's no way of us saying someone came specifically for World Cup.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

And this is what you.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

generated versus someone came just because this is New York City and then decided to partake in any World Cup activities.

Justin Kreamer

So a lion's share of the analysis is based on people who came to New York City who purchased a ticket and bought a ticket to go and watch a match from outside of the region.
