Chair Ariola asks FDNY protocol for a fire that is also a crime scene

New York City Council · Sep 30, 2026 · starts 0:29:33 · 1 min 4 sec

Brooks-Powers yields back to Chair Ariola, who asks how FDNY responds when a fire may also involve a crime scene. Sirocco says FDNY responds with caution, requests NYPD simultaneously, and dispatchers notify NYPD when they know there is a shooting or shooter.

Selvena N. Brooks-Powers

I'm going to yield.

Selvena N. Brooks-Powers

I have a few more questions, but I'm yielding to the chair.

Joann Ariola

Thank you.

Joann Ariola

So it's interesting because we're talking about a fire that then became a crime scene.

Joann Ariola

So for the FDMY, what is the FDMY protocol to respond to a fire when it may also involve a crime scene?

John Sirocco

Well, when we respond, then we are aware from the discipline.

John Sirocco

There may be a shooting there.

John Sirocco

We respond with caution.

John Sirocco

But we still respond and we're there to put that fire out.

John Sirocco

So we don't want to put our people in undue danger.

John Sirocco

But in those situations, we would respond with caution and we would request NYPD response to that location along with us.

Joann Ariola

So there's a coordination between NYPD, NYSOM, and FDMY.

John Sirocco

Absolutely.

John Sirocco

We would, in that situation, when our dispatchers know there is a shooter or shooting, they will notify NYPD simultaneously.

Joann Ariola

Okay, wonderful.
