Chair Feliz asks about e-bike infrastructure and bus lanes
Feliz asks if e-bikes can legally ride in bus lanes and whether it should be explored, and DOT says they will look into it and consider safety tradeoffs.
Okay, some final questions related to e-bike infrastructure.
Are riders able to legally ride an e-bike or a micromobility device in a bus lane?
Happens all the time, by the way, and I think it's a great idea.
But of course, we've got to make sure it's safe.
I don't want to speak out of turn, so let me just confirm that with the team and circle back to that question.
Chair.
Okay, so you're not sure about the legality.
Do you think it would be a good idea to explore that idea, allowing micro-mobility device users to drive?
I think some cities have started doing that, if I'm correct.
I think it's definitely a question that we're asking.
I mentioned earlier that we're obviously aware that two of the recent crashes were in bus lanes or busways.
And I mean, we'll have to see to what extent, as NYPD does their investigation, that was a factor.
It's something we look at, right, and we have to.
So for sure, you know, it's something that we're going to be thinking about, especially as we expand the mileage of bus lanes and busways across the city.
Everything we do with streets is a tradeoff, right, because we have limited space, so we always have to think about how to maximize safety, accessibility, and mobility for all users.
But we can't always do everything on every street, so that's something we'll be looking at closely.
