Ligia Guallpa of Workers' Justice Project testifies on root causes
Ligia Guallpa says the package of bills does not address root causes like infrastructure, worker protections, and corporate accountability, and opposes Intros 2361, 2587, and 986.
Thank you.
Yeah, all right.
Thank you.
My name is Lihia Walp.
I'm the executive director of the Workers'Justice Project.
And first, let me start by making it clear that we strongly support the goal of making our streets safer, making New Yorkers transition to safe legal micromobility devices, and making delivery work safe.
We understand the urgency because it's delivery workers who are losing their lives.
Just this week, a delivery worker died in Midtown.
And yesterday I actually brought copies of
of a recent report for each council member, and also will be submitted online, but this report actually highlights that 53% of delivery workers reported a worker-related injury,
nearly twice than the 2022 report of DCWP.
We are submitting copies here.
The package, the reason I'm here is because the current package of bills that I think is 2024 now is being here today, does not address the root causes of a street safety.
It leaves out the need for safe infrastructure.
Street infrastructure, stronger worker protections, and a real transition plan, and real accountability to corporations.
We're ready to work with you to add the missing pieces to this puzzle.
NYPD is already conducting increased e-bike enforcements.
We completely oppose Intro 2361, 2587, 986, because we feel that these bills will actually intensify
NYPD enforcement, and we cannot put workers'livelihood in the hands of delivery corporations.
We should not deploy NYPD.
We should actually look at investing in a transition plan, holding corporations accountable, expanding worker protections, and actually on page 9 and 10 will tell you the exact reason why multibillion-dollar corporations are...
How multi-billion dollar corporations exercise
enormous amount of pressure for workers.
Gustavo?
