Chair Gutiérrez asks about 3K extended day availability
Gutiérrez raises concern that families with extended day 2K may not have extended day 3K. Liss acknowledges the issue and says they will continue to look at it as they grow the program.
And I'm certainly encouraged, and as a parent, I'm excited that so many of these 2K seats have extended day or extended year option, like non-means.
I think that's amazing.
Do you all know if there will be a...
Available 3k seat extended day extended year for that family in that same program
so currently while our default model for 2k is extended day and year our 3k and pre-k program is still
for the majority of seats those seats are aligned to the school calendar we do have some extended day and year seats in 3k we know this is something that many families are looking for and we'll say something we'll continue to look at as we grow the program
I think it's really hard to give somebody something and then take it away next year.
And I think for families, it is almost impossible to make work arrangements to pick up your child at 2.15.
or you know what I mean, or kind of what to do with the summer.
I know Councilmember Riley and I spoke about this a lot, where there's not a lot of like early childhood education programs for the summer.
We were both bringing our kids to work often.
And so I think it's a challenge.
I would really love to understand a little bit deeper how you all are looking at that or the conversations with the providers or the conversations with the parents, many who have a 2K seat extended day.
And it's going to be a rude awakening when they learn at the end of the school, at the beginning of the next school year, that they're going to have to pick their kid up in the middle of the day.
So I would love to continue that conversation.
I'll pass it over to Councilmember Joseph so I can get my notes together for questions.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
