Maloney asks for geographic breakdown of pedicab complaints and enforcement
Council Member Virginia Maloney asks for geographic data on pedicab complaints and summonses. Ortiz says NYPD holds that data and DCWP can request it, and says pedicabs operate mainly in Central Park and the theater district.
Thank you, Chair.
Thank you, Councilmember Hanks.
And I'm going to hand it over to Councilmember Maloney.
And then after Councilmember Maloney, we'll go to Councilmember Shulman.
Thank you, Chair Epstein.
And thank you for your testimony and for being here.
I represent the east side of Manhattan and parts of Midtown.
And I don't think it's a coincidence we've got, of the questions, four out of five coming from folks who represent
Manhattan.
Do you have data on the geographic breakdown?
I know we were digging into a lot of the numbers around the number of pedicabs, the number of pedicabs that are unlicensed, as well as the complaints and summonses by geographic
area or by borough.
We do not have that data broken down by, it's with the police department.
But we can request the police department to provide us the geographic breakdown for you, Council Member.
That would be great.
And what about where the vehicles operate right now?
My understanding is predominantly they're operating in Central Park in the theater district.
And then what about the enforcement resources?
Are they appropriately allocated by geographic area where we're seeing the vast majority of the pedicab activity?
Well, the enforcement resources, you know, it's...
The police department and the parks department conduct the on-street enforcement.
I know they have established commands in Central Park and parts of Midtown, and that they'll strategically deploy more folks to help with enforcement when there are operations happening or there's peak seasons happening.
