Council Member Zhuang Urges Support for Intro 684 on Gifted and Talented Access
Zhuang speaks in favor of Intro 684, which requires data collection on language access and geographic location affecting access to early elementary gifted and talented programs, emphasizing equity for immigrant and low-income families.
Thank you, Majority Leader, today.
Today, I'm asking my colleagues to support our children and families across New York City.
Intro 684, take an important step towards making every child has a fair opportunity to access gifted and talented education programs.
Specially, 684 requires us to collect the data to see where the gifted and talented program are and who have the access to them.
This is important data.
As a mom with kids in our public schools, I know how important the data is.
And I know how many families, like immigrant families, low-income families, and minority families, face barriers that can make these opportunities feel out of reach.
This data collection helped us better understand those gaps, like how language access, location affect who learns about those programs and who get in them.
Passing Intro 684 is a critical day for access and equity for all, because we know every child deserves a fair chance.
And every child is talented in their own way.
We just need to make sure children in all our communities have access to every program they deserve.
Thank you.
Please vote yes.
Thank you, Councilmember.
Next is Deputy Speaker Williams, followed by Councilmember Banks.
