Aldebol asks about Jobs NYC Center services and DCAS-SBS roles
Aldebol asks about services at the Jobs NYC Center, which drew 2,400 applicants on opening day; Porter says SBS manages the center while DCAS supports with civil service exam information, kiosks, and a computerized testing center.
So the Jobs New York City office, I was there for the opening.
Very exciting.
That has begun operations and we saw over 2,400 applicants who dropped by in search of a job on opening day.
It's our understanding that the office focuses heavily on recruitment, which was our last hearing topic, but could you give us an overview of the services offered at this office, especially any programs that are dedicated to helping
current city employees develop professional skills or move upward in the municipal workforce.
And could you describe how DCAS and SBS divide the responsibilities of running this office?
Okay, so the Jobs NYC Center is managed by SBS, and DCAS plays a mostly supporting role.
So we're there to ensure that we can provide potential perspective.
Job applicants with information about the civil service process, about examinations and jobs.
But mostly the center is managed by SBS and the model that they have in line is similar.
to that of their Workforce One Center.
So they provide career services, they have workshops and trainings that are available, and employer services, job readiness opportunities.
And then in addition to that, they'll be working directly with city agencies to host hiring halls and agency spotlight events.
But we're playing mostly a supportive role.
And what does that mean when you say supportive role?
Supportive role, you know, we're the experts in the civil service system.
We manage the examination process.
So we want to have a footprint there to ensure that folks who are visiting can, you know, have answers to their questions.
Are people able to go upstairs and take an exam if they're...
Qualified to do so?
Not on the spot, but we do have a CTAC, a computerized testing center in that building, so they could go upstairs for more information.
But the goal is to have someone in the job center so that they don't have to do the back and forth.
They can apply for exams at the job center.
We have set up exam kiosks where they can learn more about exams that are opening for filing and actually visit our websites and apply for exams online.
