Jean Ryan testifies on Uber case and access
Ryan describes an Uber case brought by several people with disabilities that was taken individually and eventually discontinued with a $1,000 offer. She says she wanted access, not money, and questions why CCHR is not helping people with disabilities enforce their civil rights.
Also, I'd like to quickly mention an Uber case that six or seven of us brought as a group, but they took us individually
because Uber does not give the same service, same equal treatment to people with disabilities as it does to people without disabilities.
And every year somebody would call from the Human Rights Commission and say, are you still interested in keeping the case?
And I would say yes.
And he'd say, okay, bye.
And call me in another year and ask me the same question until one year he said, well, Uber will give you $1,000.
We're discontinuing the case.
Why are you discontinuing the case?
He wouldn't say.
But do you want the $1,000 or not?
I said, no, I want access.
That's what we sue for.
That's what the complaint was about, was access.
We have to wait.
way longer than somebody else does who doesn't use a wheelchair.
And, you know, so they closed the case.
And I don't know why.
None of us knew why.
They didn't say.
So why would we come to the, I mean, it's supposed to be a resource, but why would we go to the CCHR if they're not going to help us get our rights, our civil rights?
Thank you.
