Brewer praises Civics for All and asks about Youth Civic Hub and publicity
Gale Brewer praises Civics for All programs and asks how the Youth Civic Hub and about 100 youth groups fit into civics education. She complains that the public often believes schools do not teach civics and asks what publicity DOE is doing.
Thank you very much.
I have been to, I think, all of the civics for all programs in my district, and phenomenal.
I mean, memorizing Abraham Lincoln's inauguration speech.
So it's phenomenal.
And I can't say how great it is.
My question is, having done Teens Take the City for 100 years and been
working with Generation Citizen and done voter registration and PB and every other thing I can think of in the schools and put young people on community boards, put young people on the CECs.
Right now I'm...
Put max on all of them.
My question is, when I look at the youth civic hub, which has, I don't know, it looks like about 100 different groups on it.
So how do they play a role in all of this?
That's number one.
And then the second thing is, if I have one more freaking person come up to me at Fairway and say, the schools don't do civics.
So my question to you, no, really, I'm serious.
I'm so sick of it.
And then I have to spend 20 minutes at the coffee place right there while I'm trying to get my damn coffee explaining to them what you do.
So you really, really, really, because don't forget, not everybody's a public school parent.
Not everybody knows the schools like we do.
And the private schools do civics.
I have Spence kids.
I have Dalton kids.
I have every intern known to humankind.
I have.
And so my question is, you have.
Got to tell people what you're doing.
Really, it's to the point that nobody knows.
They literally believe that not one minute of civics is taught in the public schools.
So I would like to see what publicity you're doing on this topic.
Kamara needs to talk about it more, fine.
But you need to do more.
He set it up in our area.
I want to be clear.
So go ahead.
What are we going to do?
There's 100 groups.
How do you get them?
Not all of them.
I just looked at the list.
Not all of them do civics.
So you have to, I would like some kind of metrics, how they can help.
Because they all think they're helping.
I don't know if they really are.
Rita Joseph and I love Brotherhood Soul.
That's our number one youth program in the United States of America, if not in the world.
So they do the best.
With all due respect to everybody else, they do the best.
But you can work with others.
So I want to know how you're working with all those 100 groups and how can they help?
Because they're out there.
They're doing the same thing or they're trying.
