Wong asks CUNY and DOE about Seal credit and school outreach
Phil Wong asks what the Seal translates to in college credits and how students are informed. Alyssa Vine says no CUNY colleges award credit yet, and Cordelia Veve describes future CPL credit setup. Wong also asks how DOE will reach schools not offering the Seal; Veve says DOE will keep engaging superintendents and principals.
Thank you, Council Member.
Council Member Wong.
Thank you, Chair.
I'm reading this right now, and it says, in order to earn the seal of civic readiness, a student must earn six points from a list of criteria that demonstrates the student's proficiency in civic knowledge.
So what does that translate to in terms of college credits, and how do you inform that to the student?
Because not all schools offer these.
Civic, CEO of Civic Readiness.
Please answer that.
So at this time, there aren't any CUNY colleges that are awarding credit for the seal of civic readiness.
However, once we have faculty evaluate the seal and determine its alignment with curriculum or general education and implement a specific
the CIFIC CPL Credit Award.
That CPL Credit Award will be established in the student information system so that any student who presents appropriate documentation or once we have data sharing in place, students will be able to receive those credits.
My second question is not every school is offering this state seal of civic readiness.
So how are you going to, how does DOE plan to do outreach and let other schools know or let the students know here are the schools that have it and then, you know, work on the other schools that don't have it?
I think you just told us our strategy.
So we have grown year over year with schools that are offering the Seal of Civic Readiness.
Superintendent Deans just spoke to the great growth that he saw in his district.
And that is our intention to keep engaging superintendents and principals to see where they see the value and work with them in order to design the learning for students in their schools.
Thank you.
Thank you, Joe.
