Q&A

Dinowitz asks how much professional learning goes to contractors

New York City Council · Oct 20, 2026 · starts 1:25:24 · 1 min 55 sec

Dinowitz asks how much professional learning funding goes to private for-profit contractors. Ryle says Mikva Challenge is paid for Project Soapbox, while the rest of professional learning is provided by DOE's nine-person civics team.

Eric Dinowitz

How much of that, let's say just the professional learning, for example, how much of that goes to private for-profit contractors or contracts versus in-house?

Jenna Ryle

So that professional learning budget is for professional learning and curriculum and resource development.

Jenna Ryle

So the majority of it would go to partners like Mikva Challenge, who supports our project Soapbox Work.

Jenna Ryle

You may be familiar with that.

Jenna Ryle

And then also our professional learning sessions we often do in collaboration with cultural institutions around the city.

Jenna Ryle

And so funding for those, for where those sessions are being held and for space for that.

Jenna Ryle

And then for curriculum and resource development.

Jenna Ryle

So I can't break down for you right now, like how much is spent on each of those things, but all of that funding is for the professional learning.

Jenna Ryle

There's separate funding for the creation of like our materials that get used in professional learning, if that makes sense.

Eric Dinowitz

So to ask in a different way, how much money goes to...

Eric Dinowitz

Are you spending money on private companies to come into schools and train teachers?

Eric Dinowitz

Zero dollars and zero cents.

Jenna Ryle

Mikva Challenge is the, to the best of my knowledge, and I will double check this in my budget, the organization that we pay to provide professional learning because Project Soapbox is their product.

Jenna Ryle

The rest of our professional learning is provided by our nine-person civics for all team.

Eric Dinowitz

Okay.

Eric Dinowitz

And I'll share, speaking with some of the teachers, they were very grateful that their work, they would get per session for their work, whether it was like the working on the weekends or

Eric Dinowitz

turnkeying the learning that they did.

Eric Dinowitz

And, you know, it's less expensive to hire our very own teachers.

Eric Dinowitz

But when they get that money, that's really recognizing their work.
