Dinowitz asks if Seal is more rigorous than standard coursework

New York City Council · Oct 20, 2026 · starts 0:51:25 · 49 sec

Dinowitz asks whether DOE views the Seal as more rigorous than standard coursework. Ryle says she would not say more rigorous, but it offers multiple ways to demonstrate learning and can substitute for graduation requirements.

Eric Dinowitz

All right.

Hello.

Eric Dinowitz

So if it is adhering to a standard, does the DOE view the seal of civic readiness as more rigorous than the current standard coursework that a high school student takes?

Jenna Ryle

I don't know that we would say more rigorous.

Jenna Ryle

I think that we're saying, and the state would say, right, as well, because it can be a four plus one, that it can substitute for graduation requirements similarly to the regions exams.

Jenna Ryle

What it does offer is multiple ways to demonstrate that learning and show that application.

Jenna Ryle

I think we could, you know, refer to one of our superintendents to talk about the ways that that looks different across different schools, but keeps the same level of rigor.
