Dinowitz compares Seal of Biliteracy credit success
Dinowitz recalls a 2023 joint hearing on the Seal of Biliteracy when CUNY said only Marist automatically awarded credit. He says today 10 CUNY colleges plus two schools award between three and eight credits for that seal, showing what collaboration can achieve.
But three years ago this month, when I chaired the Higher Education Committee, we held a joint hearing like this with the Education Committee on the New York State Seal of Biliteracy, another seal awarded for
work including...
testing, including service learning.
Students earn it by accumulating points through coursework, exams, and projects.
And at that hearing, CUNY told us that of the colleges it had researched across the state, Marist was the only one automatically awarding credit for that seal.
But today, 10 CUNY colleges, along with the School of Labor and Urban Studies and the School of Professional Studies, award between three and eight credits for this seal.
I mean, that is what's possible when we work together, when we elevate these issues and elevate the really rigorous work that our students do in the classroom and incentivize our schools to do it through college credits from CUNY.
