Q&A

Joseph follows up on Black Studies and Latina curriculum

New York City Council · Oct 20, 2026 · starts 1:16:39 · 1 min 1 sec

Joseph asks how many schools incorporate the Black Studies curriculum and mentions the upcoming Latina curriculum. Ryle says she does not have the number but can get it.

Rita C. Joseph

Yeah, because that was very important.

Rita C. Joseph

We wanted to make sure that the curriculum was also reflected.

Rita C. Joseph

How many, off the top of your head, you may not know, but you can come back with us.

Rita C. Joseph

How many of the schools are incorporating the Black Studies curriculum in the Civic for All?

Jenna Ryle

I want to be mindful of not saying that they are incorporating it within Civics for All because it's really within their social studies instruction.

Jenna Ryle

I do not have that number, but I believe it's something we can get great.

Rita C. Joseph

Yeah, that would be great because we spent a lot of money on that curriculum.

Rita C. Joseph

And you have the Latina Dat curriculum coming up as well.

Rita C. Joseph

We want to make sure that you're incorporating those.

Rita C. Joseph

Cultural competence, right?

Rita C. Joseph

When we talk about curriculums and students seeing themselves in those curriculums that we teach across the city.

Rita C. Joseph

So that would be great.

Rita C. Joseph

And pre-register at the age of 16.

Rita C. Joseph

I really would love to see that across the city.

Rita C. Joseph

Right now is the moment.

Rita C. Joseph

Students are seeing exactly what's happening in our country and how can they have a voice in that process so they should be engaged in that process.
