Veve discusses statewide Civic Readiness Initiative and domains
Veve says NYC Public Schools joined the statewide Civic Readiness Initiative in 2018 and helped develop the definition and capstone. She lists the four domains: civic knowledge, civic skills in action, civic mindsets, and civic experiences.
The seal is a high priority, and we seek to offer all students the opportunity to earn it.
Our involvement with the statewide Civic Readiness Initiative began in the fall of 2018 when members of the New York City
Public Schools Department of Social Studies and Civics were invited to join the task force that NYSID assembled to work on developing a statewide definition of civic readiness, the seal of civic readiness, and the capstone component of the seal.
The finalized statewide definition of civic readiness includes four domains of civic readiness intended to be developed across grades K through 12.
Civic knowledge, civic skills in action, civic mindsets, and civic experiences.
These domains undergird our K-12 continuum of civic learning and inform the elements of the seal of civic readiness as it was being designed.
Once established, the seal of civic readiness was approved by the Board of Regents in 2021 and piloted across the state, including in New York City Public.
The launch of the NICID Seal of Civic Readiness complemented our citywide civics education initiative by offering a formal recognition that a student has demonstrated proficiency in the domains of civic readiness.
