Q&A

Abreu presses EDC on likelihood of West 125th ferry service

New York City Council · Oct 20, 2026 · starts 1:06:57 · 1 min 11 sec

Abreu says the community wants ferry service; Wong says the vision study will explore alternative service models, including private operators.

Shaun Abreu

You mentioned in your testimony that

Shaun Abreu

you're looking potentially at private operators at the site.

Shaun Abreu

We just want ferry service there.

Shaun Abreu

And I have made this very, very clear in conversations in private, obviously now in public, that that's something that the community in West Harlem has been asking for for a very long time.

Shaun Abreu

I mean, what's the likelihood that we're going to get ferry service there?

James Wong

I think that the goal of our vision study is to expand the way we're thinking about ferries much broader than what we have in the past.

James Wong

In the past, we're

James Wong

We've looked at what is only NYC ferry.

James Wong

Full-time, seven-day-a-week, every single day of the year, commuter service at all times.

James Wong

And that has created certain constraints because it comes with such a high price tag.

James Wong

One of the ways that we're approaching the vision study is exactly as you'd mentioned, to look at some of those alternative service models.

James Wong

We haven't finished the work.

James Wong

I think that we'd like to spend some more time as we go through this to understand, you know, with the routes that are operating nearby, does it make sense for a private operator?

James Wong

Is that a conversation we can have with them to help see what they would need?

James Wong

You know, those are the kind of things that we're going to explore as part of the study.
