Maloney asks about safety of East River residents and 1000-foot rule
Fredrickson says the SOP requires takeoff 1,000 feet from shore; pilots have discretion for weather; DOC NYC monitors and can penalize.
There are 250,000 constituents along the East River, many of them my constituents in District 4.
So what is EDC doing to ensure the safety of those New Yorkers who are adjacent to these
seaplane operations along the East River.
So as part of the SOP, so first they have to follow all the federal regulations, but in addition, as part of the, we call the airport master record, there are some remarks
in there as well as the SOP that DocNYC has.
And one of them, for example, is that
where it's safe that they take off 1,000 feet off of the shore.
So that's one way that we ensure distance and adequate spacing to the coastline.
Who specifically monitors the 1,000 feet from the shore, and what are the consequences when an operator violates that?
Yeah, so that is done through DocNYC, but I think there's always opportunities to strengthen kind of tracking of that 1,000-foot offshore rule.
I will say that there are times when
The pilot has the discretion to go closer based on weather or the conditions of the
The water.
So it is not like a hard and fixed rule.
It is a strong recommendation there.
