Maloney asks which ferry routes are near capacity
Wong says Rockaway summer weekends are full; East River capacity expanded by splitting routes; Rockaway Reserve offers paid seat reservations.
Which routes are operating near capacity or substantially below capacity and how has ridership changed?
So, you know, because it's all at different times of the year, there's times when there are going to be vessels that are very full.
Going to the Rockaways on a summer weekend, they're going to be full vessels.
But in general, there's often space for us to get more riders on board.
It's important for us that in the morning and evening peak,
periods.
We have enough capacity to get people to work and to school.
We think that that's the most important time that we cannot say, sorry, the vessel is full.
And that was one of the areas where on the East River, we started to have to do that.
There were times when people were standing at a landing and it's the morning and they're trying to get to a meeting and they couldn't get on board.
That to us was a real issue that needed to be addressed.
And as part of the optimization from last year that we implemented in December, we've actually opened up a tremendous amount of capacity because we now run that as two routes.
And we've seen tremendous growth, which means there were a lot of people who wanted to ride that route, and now they're able to do so.
In other places, I had mentioned the Rockaway route, you know, the beach route, which is now extended all the way to the Bronx.
You can start in the Bronx and get all the way to the Rockaways.
It is a long trip.
But in order to help manage the demand on those places, we also introduced opportunities like Rockaway Reserve, where you can reserve a seat.
You can, you're allowed to pay more and to have access to a reserved seat, which gives people more confidence about which trips they're going to make.
But broadly, you know, we have, we continue to have space to grow.
We're excited about that because we want to see more people on the system.
