Q&A

Maloney asks about fuel costs and hedging

New York City Council · Oct 20, 2026 · starts 0:47:34 · 57 sec

Wong says fuel is a major cost driver; EDC hedges fuel prices and is hedged through most of the current fiscal year.

Virginia Maloney

What are some of the largest expenses and how has fuel prices impacted the operational efficiency of the ferry system?

James Wong

Yeah, fuel is a major cost driver for the system.

James Wong

I'm happy to report that because we are able to hedge the pricing on fuels,

James Wong

on fuel in the future, we've done very well with our ability to keep fuel prices in check.

James Wong

We have seen increases, that is true, but we are not seeing the same kind of increases that are everywhere else because we've been able to hedge in future time.

James Wong

We are still looking ahead and of course, you know, future cost of fuel is increasing, so that is an area that we're keeping an eye on.

Virginia Maloney

When would that you expect fuel prices to increase?

James Wong

We have a continuous hedging program.

James Wong

We are hedged through most of the current fiscal year.

James Wong

So we make regular decisions on how to extend that and what price points to do so.
