Narcisse asks H&H about emergency volume and acuity increases

New York City Council · Oct 20, 2026 · starts 1:20:01 · 1 min 25 sec

Narcisse asks whether H&H has seen increased emergency department volume or hospital admissions. Motzquist says volume has been increasing since 2020, with over 1.1 million emergency department patients across 11 facilities in 2025, and higher-acuity cases have increased significantly.

Mercedes Narcisse

Challenges that we have.

Mercedes Narcisse

Have H&H Hospital experienced an overall increase in emergency department volume or hospital admission in recent years?

Unidentified speaker

Yes, let me just get the data, please.

Josh Motzquist

The overall emergency volume has been increasing since 2020.

Josh Motzquist

Our volume is...

Josh Motzquist

I apologize, I don't have the data.

Josh Motzquist

Our 2025 eating counters are over 1 million patients.

Josh Motzquist

What was that?

Josh Motzquist

Over 1 million emergency department patients across our 11 facilities, 1.1 million in 2025.

Josh Motzquist

The biggest increase for us has also been in the higher acuity cases.

Josh Motzquist

So we try to rank our patients by severity index.

Josh Motzquist

You might be familiar with the ESI scoring, if you remember back in the day, the emergency service index.

Josh Motzquist

And so one through five, one tends to be a sicker patient, five tends to be a less sick patient.

Josh Motzquist

And our overall increase in the ones and twos have significantly increased over time.
