Q&A

Shulman asks about FDNY CFR medical runs and housing growth planning

New York City Council · Oct 20, 2026 · starts 1:35:45 · 2 min 38 sec

Schulman asks how many EMS calls are routed to FDNY fire companies and whether FDNY is planning for new housing and population growth. Esposito says fire companies routinely handle about 1,000 CFR medical runs per day and that FDNY is looking at technology and AI to guide resource placement.

Lynn C. Schulman

The other is that I want to ask you, I'm very close to the firehouse.

Lynn C. Schulman

By the way, EMS and fire does a spectacular job, and I actually participated in Community Day this past weekend.

Lynn C. Schulman

But the firefighters are telling me that they're responding.

Lynn C. Schulman

In fact, when I was sitting there, they had to respond to an EMS call.

Lynn C. Schulman

So my question is, how many EMS calls are routed to FDNY during any particular tour?

John Esposito

Our fire companies routinely are doing about 1,000 CFR medical emergency runs each 24-hour period each day.

John Esposito

So some companies might be doing 10 or 12, while other companies might only have one or two.

Lynn C. Schulman

Does that depend what's in the queue?

Lynn C. Schulman

Like if there's a backlog, they'll go out?

John Esposito

They do not go out on the backlog.

John Esposito

It's simply if it's a segment one, two, or three, and then if that engine is available.

Lynn C. Schulman

So I appreciate that.

Lynn C. Schulman

The other thing, too, is that I want to mention, you know, the city is in a position now where we're building a lot of affordable housing and doing a lot of construction and everything else.

Lynn C. Schulman

So you're going to have a lot more people living in different places.

Lynn C. Schulman

And so I presume that the system will be inundated with more.

Lynn C. Schulman

With more 911 calls because you're going to have more people living in all different parts of the city.

Lynn C. Schulman

Are you planning for that separate from the problems that exist now?

John Esposito

As I had mentioned earlier in my testimony about trying to use technology and AI to best tell us where we should move and put resources.

John Esposito

It is something that we are looking at.

Lynn C. Schulman

And I'm also going to say whatever you, and by the way, I've given funding for equipment for Aphidney.

Lynn C. Schulman

I've given money for equipment for EMS.

Lynn C. Schulman

So I just, you know, we're big supporters here.

Lynn C. Schulman

You've got to let us know what you need so we can push in the speaker, and everybody is behind this.

Lynn C. Schulman

And like I said, I appreciate everything that you do, and let's figure out how to resolve this.

Lynn C. Schulman

Thank you.

John Esposito

And thank you.

John Esposito

And we do thank the council for, we know that you've supported us with driving simulators and conditions vehicles and response vehicles.

John Esposito

So thank you very much.

Joann Ariola

Thank you.
