Chair asks what DOP provides before intake; Dessimore describes notice of rights
Brooks-Powers pivots to Intro 1104 and asks what information DOP currently provides to youth and parents before an intake interview. Dessimore says DOP provides a notice of rights, goes over the process, and now has court liaison officers give notices to families in cases removed from youth part.
And so if there is a legal reason, then obviously they're going to counsel the officers about the legal reason.
If there is a strong...
So you've just answered me.
Thank you.
Okay, good.
Pivoting to intro 1104, my bill.
Thank you, Commissioner, for your sentiments on the bill.
I'm looking forward to having more conversations around it, but just had a few questions for the record.
What information does the department currently provide to young people and their parents or guardians before an intake interview?
So every parent and young person that comes to intake, we provide them with a notice of rights.
And then when the officer meets with the family, they go over the process.
One thing that I did put into place is that for those
cases that are being removed from youth park, I've had the CLOs now keep copies of those notice of rights to give out to the family just in case they are not participating in the intake.
At least they have those notice of rights so that they can review and have it before they even come over to the cases being removed over the family court.
So it's a process.
It's whatever the parent has, whatever question we go through, this is a possibility that can happen based on
the circumstance of the case.
We're making sure we interview this person.
We try to gather information on the school.
