Restler underscores juvenile detention urgency and asks about gun policy
Restler says there are 352 young adults in juvenile detention and DOP needs to help drive down incarceration. He asks about current DOP policy on officers carrying guns after Commissioner Holmes required every uniformed officer to carry one.
You know, it's not like you have to finish between, you got four months to finish this program.
A lot of the programs that we're really looking at is making sure that the client can finish whatever certification, but it's done at their pace.
And we're looking to look for, you know,
you know, anything in AI, IT, we're looking at a plethora of different programming to bring back to probation.
I appreciate that.
I would just underscore the urgency because, you know, I think as of Friday, Councilmember Stevens told me we have 352 young adults in our juvenile detention facilities.
We do not have capacity.
I've heard a lot from the Mndani administration about how they're renovating spaces and creating more beds for people.
I have heard less about how we're driving down incarceration.
And we need DOP to step up and be a real partner there.
