Stevens reports mismanagement and kids sleeping on floor
Stevens says staff have contacted her about mismanagement and overcrowding, and that she received photos of kids sleeping on the floor and in chairs at Crossroads. Gaston says every child has a bed, bedding, and storage; Stevens says the photo shows otherwise.
so it's like what are some other things that we can do so I just I want to leave that there because I'm just really frustrated in that sense um and again I had a press conference right after our first visit maybe three weeks ago
Since then, I have had so many staffers show up at my office, DM me, call me, find me on the street because of the conditions that are in this facility.
And that's not just because of overcrowding.
Some of this stuff is because of overcrowding, but some of this sounds like mismanagement.
And I want to be clear about that as well.
So there's a difference between like it's overcrowded, we have these issues.
The overcrowdedness is expediting these issues.
But the amount of things, like I literally got a text message as I was sitting here on Saturday at Crossroad with kids sleeping on the floor.
So could I ask, are kids sleeping on the floor in the facility?
I have a picture.
In chairs.
So can we talk about that?
Why are young people sleeping on floors and in chairs in the facility?
And it's at Horizon.
So I really appreciate the energy and passion that you have in this.
We've had many opportunities to talk about our shared passion in this and the efforts across the administration around the
variety of programs and approaches that are needed in order to not just kind of instantly reduce census, but also a
sustainable change that will help reduce the flow that is coming into detention.
Every child has a bed.
Heard earlier the variety of names that they get called, a bed, bedding, and places for them to keep their belongings.
I want to see you the picture because this is not kids on, these were kids were on the floor.
I'm sorry, excuse me, I just got corrected.
It's crossroads, not horizon.
It's crossroads.
They were on the floor, and I'll send this to you.
They're on the floor with pillows.
One of them is sleeping in a chair with their feet up, and they have tubs with their feet up.
There's stuff in it.
Why is that happening?
Because if this is happening, that means it is really a crisis, correct?
So then we need to get them out.
So I'll text it to you.
I wish it was sent to me before because I would have blown it up here.
I'm trying to get an understanding of why young people are sleeping on the floor with pillows, with blankets.
Is that not happening?
Is this picture not for real?
So I can't speak to when the picture was taken, what time of day it was taken.
I've had the opportunity to visit the facilities a number of times.
And depending on when that is, young people are either in their beds in the common areas or they are in chairs watching TV, watching movies, playing their video games.
And so, but I think the bottom line is absolutely critical that the young people have what they need
in the way that they should have them and absolutely committed to making sure that that's the case.
