Q&A

Chair asks about Jobs NYC Center and hiring halls

New York City Council · Oct 27, 2026 · starts 0:27:00 · 1 min 13 sec

Won asks whether recruiters at Jobs NYC hiring halls are recruiting for community hiring, how someone inquiring about community hiring is served, and about staffing and hours. She cites complaints about long lines and poor follow-up.

Julie Won

Thank you so much.

Julie Won

And I want to acknowledge that we've been joined by Councilmember Kavan.

On September 28, 2026, DCAS and SBS opened a Jobs NYC Center at 2nd Lafayette Street in Lower Manhattan.

While the mayor was praised for converting a long, empty building into a space for career services and workforce development, multiple attendees have cited that event was poorly organized, leaving many job seekers scrawled in the process, as Councilmember Epstein has described.

Julie Won

Are recruiters at these halls recruiting individuals for community hiring needs?

Julie Won

And if someone walks into a hiring hall inquiring about a community hiring opportunity, how are they being serviced?

Julie Won

Can you help me understand how many staff are on site at all times?

Julie Won

What are the hours?

Julie Won

What is going on?

Julie Won

Because I get so many complaints as well where we've seen it in the news where over, I think over 50,000 people have applied to jobs to the city of New York and they haven't even heard back at all and they're really upset.

Julie Won

And I think a single digit was hired into this new administration's agencies.

Julie Won

So there's just so much confusion and so much frustration if you could help us understand better.
