Abreu asks how many BIC trucks have side guard waivers
Abreu asks how many trucks under BIC jurisdiction have side guard waivers. Crotty says BIC regulates about 7,000 trucks and about half have waivers, mostly dump trucks. Abreu asks for collision data involving waived trucks; Crotty does not have it and will follow up.
Sounds like you know a lot about side guards.
How many trucks under a BICS jurisdiction currently have a waiver?
Okay, so we have about 7,000 trucks under our...
Sorry, say that again?
We have about 7,000 trucks that are under our jurisdiction, that we have licensed, that we've given plates to.
As I mentioned, the largest share of that are not traditional trash trucks that you throw a garbage bag into.
The largest share are C&D, construction and demolition, what we call Class 2 vehicles.
These are the heavy-duty vehicles.
And most of those Class 2 vehicles are dump trucks.
And those dump trucks, like I said, often have additional axles.
So about half of the vehicles that we regulate have waivers.
So those are these dump trucks.
Okay.
All right, so you're saying of the waivers given, most of them are dump trucks?
Of the waivers given, the largest share are dump trucks.
What are some other type of exemptions given for non-dump trucks?
So, right.
So the vehicle that was involved in the 14th Street incident, for example, was not a dump truck.
It was a truck that had this, my understanding, and please correct me if I'm wrong, like a high-powered vacuum that's used, involved to kind of clean up street debris when there's construction or tearing up of a street.
That had a toolbox and it had a fuel tank in that area.
And that's why it couldn't support a side guard.
There are many different designs of trucks.
I don't want to give you broad categories.
Dump truck is the easiest category because many of them do have those features I mentioned.
But there can be a host of types of vehicles on the road where the manufacturer who builds the vehicle decides to put things underneath the truck in those spaces.
Do you know how many of those trucks that were granted waivers have been involved in collisions with pedestrians or cyclists since 2023?
I do not have that information.
Or how it compares to those with not being granted a waiver.
It's a good question, Chair.
I will see if we have the data that allows us to break it down that way with respect to collision involvement and whether they had a side guard or a waiver.
We'll have to get back to you.
I think it's slightly disappointing to not have that information.
Very disappointing, actually, to not have that information.
Please get it to us as soon as you can.
