Abreu questions DOT-NYPD coordination on crash investigations
Abreu asks how DOT and NYPD coordinate on crash investigations. Labadie describes co-location at the traffic management center, shared collision information, DOT field responses, and reengineering after crashes. Rivera adds that the agencies hold monthly Vision Zero meetings and education campaigns.
What does the coordination between DOT and NYPD currently look like?
How do you coordinate on crash investigations, for instance?
And how does DOT use its relationship with NYPD to implement street safety improvements?
Sure.
Happy to discuss our collaboration.
So one of the great parts about our Vision Zero partnership with NYPD is that we're co-located at our traffic management center in Queens.
And so when information comes in that there has been a collision, we are there together and receive that information at the same time.
NYPD obviously responds to do its investigations.
DOT also responds in person in the field to assess the conditions on the ground, assess if there's any immediate fixes required to make the location safe, such as a downed sign or other sorts of issues that can be immediately repaired.
And then, of course, we continue as NYPD collects more information, we receive that information.
And in the stream of our data work, use NYPD's crash data to analyze and to find those trends and to assess individual crashes.
DOT then works on any sort of reengineering plans or other sort of policy implementation after the fact for a given crash.
But we work very closely both in the immediate, in the near term, as well as in the overall holistic work when we respond and how we share data and how we collaborate and how we respond both from a policy perspective as well as from a response perspective.
On the PD end, great partners in the DOT.
As you heard, co-located in the shared space, traffic management center, share the same data.
We have the monthly Vision Zero meetings on the education end, which is one of the three E's.
Every season brings its own challenges.
And we work with the DOT to inform the public about traffic safety initiatives.
So year to date, 21 education initiatives were scheduled, of which 18 of the 21 have been completed.
Right now we're working with them, and we have the wonderful, thanks to the DOT,
We have the Halloween traffic safety, working hand in hand with this.
I think about 30,000 flyers were created.
So there's a lot of work we're doing, and we appreciate the work that...
Thank you, Chief.
