Farías asks about JASA Throgs Neck Senior Center extended closure
Council Member Amanda Farías asks about the JASA Throgs Neck Senior Center, which closed during COVID, reopened, then closed again due to mold and roof/HVAC damage. She says the center has been without a senior center for six years and asks when repairs and reopening can be expected. Trimble says the center is slated for PACT renovation, with project closing later 2027 and construction soon after.
Good morning.
Thank you for being here today.
So I have a question about the Jasa Throgsnack Senior Center.
I always have a question about the Jasa Throgsnack Senior Center.
It's faced an extended closure.
I mean, first they closed during COVID, and then they tried to reopen, closed again because they discovered mold.
Looks like the repairs started a year later, but they were stopped because there was additional, there was damage to the roof and additional structural damage and
needed roof repair and a replacement of the HVAC system from what I understand, just to start with.
And so they've been without a senior center for six years.
That's a long time.
If you know the Throgs Neck area, it's very, you know, kind of remote and far away, not easy to travel from.
And there was a temporary solution.
They were using the Kiss Bay Boys and Girls Club, but then they were unable to use that.
Because of the kitchen situation and because the children, especially during the summer, they use the facility all day, every day for summer camp.
And have been trying to find a solution ever since nearby and have not found one.
Many of the seniors, I don't want to even say many, because many don't want to go all the way to Co-op City.
To the senior center there.
They don't like it.
They don't like having to get on a bus or a shuttle to Co-op City so far away from their community.
And where the senior center is housed is in Randall,
Balcom, where it's senior housing, but the entire Throgs Neck community really uses that senior center.
So you have over 3,000 residents in Throgs Neck houses and Throgs Neck addition.
And I'm using a low number here, but probably about a thousand seniors right now don't have access to a center.
So I just want to know what is the, you know, because it's, you know, we were told it's now under packed.
What's the situation there?
When can we expect there to be repairs?
When can we expect to have that senior center reopened again?
Yes, thank you, Council Member.
I'm familiar with the center and the decision to close it a few years back due to the significant conditions there.
The center is slated to go through PACT and will receive full renovations as part of that.
That project is anticipated to close later 2027, so it's still a little while away, and then construction would start soon after.
Um,
