Chair Brooks-Powers asks how DOC ensures CHS is notified of pregnancy
Brooks-Powers asks how DOC ensures CHS is promptly notified when someone is identified as pregnant. Chard says intake screening is done by CHS, and DOC generally does not hold medical information or require disclosure.
And how does the department ensure that CHS is promptly notified when a person is identified as pregnant or postpartum?
So CHS would identify a patient as pregnant or postpartum, and then according to New York State correction law, a woman or patient who is within eight weeks of a pregnancy event, that information is shared with DOC.
But in terms of DOC, how are they ensuring that CHS is promptly notified when a person is identified as being pregnant?
Because they're coming into care first at Department of Correction, correct?
Pregnant.
Sure.
So someone would, when someone's coming in through intake, the first step that they're doing once they're on Rikers Island is going through that intake screening process.
And the intake is done by CHS?
Correct.
Yes.
There's generally not a case where DOC would be notifying CHS.
It would be occurring the other way around because we don't hold that medical information and we don't require people to disclose to us.
Got it.
