Chair Brooks-Powers asks how NYPD and DOC share pregnancy information

New York City Council · Oct 27, 2026 · starts 0:40:37 · 1 min 10 sec

Brooks-Powers asks how medical information is shared between NYPD and DOC when custody changes. Chard says NYPD does not share medical information with DOC and people go through medical screening at the courthouse.

Selvena N. Brooks-Powers

Going back to screenings for pregnancy, postpartum status, how is medical information shared between NYPD and DLC when someone changes custody?

Chelsea Chard

Sorry, that's between NYPD and...

Selvena N. Brooks-Powers

Department of Correction.

Chelsea Chard

Sorry, can you repeat the question?

Selvena N. Brooks-Powers

Sure.

Selvena N. Brooks-Powers

How is medical information shared between NYPD and DLC when someone changes custody?

Selvena N. Brooks-Powers

So when they're going from being in custody with the NYPD, they're being transferred over to the Department of Correction to be in custody.

Selvena N. Brooks-Powers

How is that information shared for an individual that is pregnant?

Chelsea Chard

NYPD doesn't share medical information with us.

Chelsea Chard

They would go through the medical screenings that are happening at the courthouse.

Selvena N. Brooks-Powers

But is there any documentation or anything to denote, like, this person in custody is pregnant or any type of dynamic related to that condition?

Chelsea Chard

Not that I'm aware of.
