Michael Tucker calls for Rikers hearing and audit of DOC and CHS
Michael Tucker, with Community Hub and partner of Khalil's Cartel Center, asks the committee to audit DOC and CHS, freeze funding, and hold a hearing on Rikers Island. He says families are suffering and demands accountability.
Good afternoon, committee.
My name is Michael Tucker, not Khalil.
I just wanted to clarify that.
I'm a part of an organization called the Community Hub and was invited to be a part of this as partner with the Khalil's Cartel Center.
On June 10th, as well as June 25th, I spoke at the New York City Council of Criminal Justice hearings, representing a family who has a member on Records Island that's been there to date 3,000 days.
I'm here today because at both of those hearings, I urged the committee to do a few things.
One, do a full audit of Department of Corrections as well as CHS.
I asked that they funding be froze.
I'm asking.
To have an immediate, immediate hearing, if possible, at Records Island, because we're hearing from the people that work there, and it's come here to tell us what is going on.
When you ask them questions, they can't fully answer those questions.
I would love...
To see this committee hold this hearing at Records Island, to speak to the inmates, to the individuals that's there suffering every day,
dealing with mental health issues, dealing with being abused by the correction officers and the people that are there in place to protect, not to protect them, but to basically make
make sure that they're doing what they're supposed to do in regards to doing their time.
Millions of dollars are being spent with these agencies, and they're doing nothing.
Once again, I'm asking that y'all have a hearing.
subpoena, the department, Stanley Richardson, have him come back and testify, the head of CHS, because it is critical that Records Island is closed, not tomorrow, today.
And people are tired of their family members.
Being suffering at records Island.
And as I said, these are something, this is what y'all are here for.
And we're asking y'all to hold them accountable.
People are not being held accountable.
