Brewer describes MOECM moves and eight-month leadership gap
Brewer says the mayor first moved the Office of Ethnic and Community Media into Mass Engagement, then later into the communications office. She says the executive director left at the end of 2025 and no replacement was appointed until September 2026.
On one of his first days in office, the mayor moved the Office of Ethnic and Community Media into the Office of Mass Engagement.
Ethnic and community media outlets welcomed the move.
They viewed it as a signal that that media was being valued as both channels
for messaging but also as partners in helping New Yorkers understand and participate in civic
However, that didn't happen.
The executive director left at the end of 2-5, and no new executive director was appointed until September of this year, after the office was moved again, this time into the mayor's director of communications office.
When asked about OCM,
At a previous hearing, the Commissioner of the Office of Mass Engagement was unable to answer the questions about the office, despite it being part of mass engagement for a year.
The Commissioner referred questions to the Director of Communications.
We hope the new Executive Director, thank you for being here today, will be able to address the many concerns we are hearing from community and ethnic media outlets.
As well as the questions we have about the function of the office, including the website.
