Williams says transparency and data access drive good-government package
Williams thanks Menin and Brewer and says government cannot be accountable if residents do not know what it is doing. She says the Council needs data to make policy and periodically reviews charter and code reporting burdens.
Thank you so much.
Good morning, everyone.
I would like to thank Speaker Menon and Chair Brewer for being here today and convening this hearing on the Mayor's Office of Ethnic and Community Media and Government Spending on Advertisements.
Government cannot be responsible to the people if the people do not know what the government is doing.
Ensuring that our messaging is reaching people where they are at is critical for governmental transparency and accountability, and this is what good governing is.
Part of good governing is also ensuring that we, as the legislative branch of government, have access to the data and information we need in order to be an effective policymaking body.
There are many obligations that our local laws place on the mayoral administration and city agencies, and we are here at the city council are very mindful of that burden.
As part of our due diligence as a steward of good governing, we periodically review the charter and administrative code to reduce unnecessary burdens on city agency staff and repeal or streamline outdated reporting or other duplicative or unnecessary.
