Council Member Wong Inquires About Length of Stay and Graduation Rates
Council Member Phil Wong asks about the average length of stay for youth in secure detention and the number of high school graduations achieved within the facilities.
That report covered the period of COVID.
It was a period of five years, mostly that predated the Adams administration.
That's what it was looking at.
The current attendance rate, according to our DOE partners in both sites, is about 72 to 74%, which is close to the attendance rate in the community.
Can you talk about the number of days the child spends in a detention center and average before they get to leave me one minute?
The average length of stay in secure detention for 2025 was about 97.4 days.
So graduation rates are difficult.
It's not a school because young people don't start on the first day of school.
They come whenever the court mandates them into our facility.
We have graduated about 150 young people over the last three and a half years.
And two years ago we signed an MOU with CUNY, and we have young people who have either graduated with a diploma or have achieved their GED engaged in college programming in both facilities through Hostos and BMCC.
Okay, thank you.
