Council Member Wong Questions ACS on Detention Center Census and Absenteeism
Council Member Phil Wong asks for the current census of Horizon and Crossroads detention centers and questions the high school absenteeism rates reported by the state comptroller.
Um I would like to ask about the um the two detention centers.
Um I've been reading the mayor's executive budget, I've been hearing and reading the the statement.
I just don't see any uh numbers uh regarding the number of uh kids in the two sites at uh Brownsville site, 17 Bristol Street, and and the one in Matthaven, 560 Brook Avenue.
Can you talk about like sure Nancy can give you we have numbers in the testimony, but Nancy can give you what we have today.
Thank you.
Um as of this morning, we had 181 um young men in horizon.
Um in Crossroads we had 186 um young people, eleven are young women in that facility.
Okay.
Um last year there's a report from uh the state compont at Napoli regarding both sites, and I'm gonna read that to you.
Uh the uh the report was data in April 2025, and uh it mentions that the the absence rate, school absence absenteeism rates for uh ranges anywhere from 13 to 73 percent days absent.
Um can you talk about what's been done to improve that?
Yes, I can talk about that.
