Aldebol asks about justice-involved youth and CUNY referrals
Aldebol asks if DCAS would provide referrals to CUNY courses for justice-involved youth; Porter says they are supportive and will follow up with sister agencies.
This council has heard on the justice-impacted community that justice has heard significant concerns
from justice-involved youth about critical barriers to education, particularly at secure detention facilities.
Many young people report that they are not going to school or receiving an education.
In best cases, youth are given educational packets that receive little to no instruction.
Would DCAS consider providing justice-involved youth with referrals to CUNY courses or career readiness materials to improve their likelihood of entering civil service?
What I would say is that we're supportive of working with our sister agencies who oversee these facilities to ensure that the
justice-involved youth have information readily available to them regarding the civil service system.
So that is something that we can definitely follow up on.
Thank you.
