Caban details intersex discrimination and thanks Interact
Caban says Intro 131 would ensure the human rights law protects intersex New Yorkers. She thanks Interact and directly impacted people for working on the legislation and describes discrimination, denial of health care, and hate violence faced by intersex people.
My bill, Intro 131, would ensure that our city's human rights law protects intersex New Yorkers from discrimination.
Before I describe that legislation, I just want to deeply, deeply thank the folks at Interact.
We have the executive director, Erica, here, as well as Liat Feller, Jen Levine, Alicia Roth-Weigel, Alyssa Ball.
Brian E.
Price, and I remember meeting with students to work on this piece of legislation, Intersex Students, and it represents the best of what
government governing and being in partnership with community should be.
Directly impacted people coming to their elected officials and saying where the government needs to step up to protect them.
So, you know, it's been clear to folks in the LGBTQIA plus community that for too long, intersex people have faced bigotry and discrimination, been denied the health care that they need, and have been subjected to hate violence.
And the federal government has at best failed to protect intersex people, and that's putting it in the mildest, kindest terms.
And under this administration specifically,
has made it difficult for many intersex people to obtain documents reflecting an ex-gender marker.
And that's why it's...
all the more important that our city enforce anti-discrimination laws to keep intersex New Yorkers safe, enable them to access the care that they need, and protect them from discrimination.
So again, thank you, and I'll pass it back to the chairs.
Thank you.
