Hanif reads statement on autism diversity and Autistic Pride Day history
The statement says autism presents differently for every person and no one should be reduced to a diagnosis. It describes how Aspies for Freedom created Autistic Pride Day in 2005 as a counter to Autism Awareness Month narratives.
Autism spectrum disorder presents differently for every single person, and no two individuals share the same experience, and no one should be reduced to a diagnosis.
And yet for too long, public conversation around autism has done exactly that.
That's exactly why Autistic Pride Day exists.
In 2005, an organization called Aspies...
For freedom, led by autistic individuals, created this day.
They didn't wait for someone else to speak on their behalf.
They built a space for self-determination, for neurodiversity, for pride.
And they did.
did it deliberately as a counter to the Autism Awareness Month narrative, which was too often led by non-autistic voices, too often centered on deficits, on fixing, on curing.
