Joseph asks about increase in disability cases and city agency remedies
Joseph asks whether CCHR is seeing more disability cases as federal civil rights offices scale back. Rivera says complaints and inquiries have increased, and explains remedies against city agencies include policy changes, trainings, and long-term monitoring.
Right, exactly.
Is CCHR seeing more disability cases as federal civil rights offices scale back on these rights?
Are you seeing an increase in numbers?
There is an increase in the number of complaints filed and the inquiries that we're seeing for sure, right?
Whether it's a direct correlation, I think we can say affirmatively, right?
Like there is something happening there and people are choosing to come to us now that their identities and their protected classes are under attack at the federal level.
Thank you.
And when CCHR find a city agency at fault, what remedy applies and who makes sure they are carried out?
Yeah, when another one get in trouble.
So we do have authority over our sibling agencies.
While we may not seek civil penalties per se, right, we're often looking again for that affirmative relief that ingrains, right, equity and justice in their policies.
More significantly, we require in trainings, many times we are doing the trainings ourselves to make sure the training is adequate and appropriate.
We're requiring that individual policies are revamped and we will approve.
Those policies have to come to us for approval before they're able to implement them.
And in significant cases, we can require long-term monitoring to make sure that compliance is happening year after year.
